Auriga Sample |

| Vans and winches on fantail of the ship Auriga, from sampling cruise A-1-03-SC. From left, note the white Acquisition van which houses the computer stations for underway watches during pre-coring surveys. Center is the large orange winch used for coring. Behind that are two more white vans, one for processing core samples and one housing the mechanics shop. In right foreground, scientist readies core liners for the next station. The 2000 lb piston core weight is in its blue "bucket" and the core barrel protrudes towards the camera. On a station, the entire assembly is lifted into a vertical position, then the core assembly is attached to the winch wire, lifted out of the bucket and lowered to the ocean floor, where the weight drives the core barrel into the sediment. The winch then pulls the piston core and weight back to the water surface and into the bucket, which is returned to horizontal to enable the scientists to remove the core sample. Core lengths recovered on this cruise ranged from less than one meter to five meters. Note the tiny patch of shoreline visible between van and smokestack. Many cores were taken quite near shore. |
