- News From the Field: Scientists Map Unexplored Arctic Sea Floor
This month, scientists from the USGS and Natural Resources Canada are mapping the sea floor in the Arctic Ocean aboard two different ships. This research will shed light on the Arctic’s geologic history and help define the limits of the U.S. and Canadian extended continental shelf.
United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea allows coastal nations to exercise certain sovereign rights over the extended continental shelf.
Read more about this research, including a blog written by USGS Public Affairs Specialist Jessica Robertson who is on board one of the ships, the US Coast Guard Cutter Healy.
