Cascadia Earthquakes & Tsunami Hazard Studies
F.S. Sonne International Cooperative
Great effort was required to ensure the success of the Cascadia cruise of the R/V SONNE. Until this week, it was not clear that Marine Mammals regulations would allow the cruise to go forward. However, on Tuesday, April 10th, Mike Fisher received word, after a considerable effort on his part, that the Sonne is permitted to conduct the seismic risk assessment study off the Washington sector of the Cascadia margin. Special State Department permitting was also required because the SONNE is a German research vessel. During the brief stopover in San Francisco personnel of the USGS Marine Facility in Redwood City, CA, installed the USGS equipment (55 kb) to be used on the Washington corridor study onto the Sonne.
