07_27_04 Geospeakers Meeting Summary

Our president, Ann, rocked us to order and launched into the items of club business. First, Ann reminded the officers about the training session tomorrow night at Roche, and urged us who couldn't make that one to check the District 4 website (http://www.d4tm.org) for future sessions. Next, our Area Governor has asked for someone to help organize the Fall Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest. Please let Ann know if you are interested.

Finally, Ann reinstituted our quarterly showcase, passing out "distinctive" cookies to the following Geospeakers:
Chris and Cynthia, who had 100% attendance in the 2nd quarter!
Ann won the Most Humorous Table Topics three times!
Cynthia and Mitch were Most Humorous twice!
As a club, we had 93 attendees for this quarter, a record-breaking total!

Ann then turned control of the meeting over to our Toastmaster du jour, Cecilia, who was taking on this role for the first time! She ably introduced the theme of "dating", pointing out that she and her husband still go on dates. It is trickier for them now with a toddler; they must use a babysitter, bring cell phones with them, but the rewards are worth all the arranging.

Cecilia called on Neil, our Master Evaluator, who introduced today's evaluation team: Fran, stepping in at the last moment as Timer (thanks, Fran!); Carol as Ah Counter, Joanna as Wordmaster/Grammarian, who introduced our Word of the Day, "simpatico", and Stephanie as speech evaluator.

Ann took her turn as our speaker today, giving her 7th speech from the C&L manual. In "The Other Side of Clutter", Ann told us of the fearsome "paper tiger", "closet creature", "toy monster", and other gremlins that can bedevil our home and cause the messiness and clutter accumulation that so many of us are familiar with. She then offered some suggestions on what we can do about it, and introduced herself as a professional organizer and a member of NAPO - The National Association of Professional Organizers.

Mitch handled Table Topics today, posing questions on the theme of dating that ranged from online dating, to the "dark side" of the other person that only shows up after a few dates to blind dates and being fixed up with someone you could not stand. The group handled these questions well even though, as was pointed out, many of us haven't dated in approximately 1,000 years. Neil took Most Humorous as he told of a disastrous first date (also known as "Never take a first date to a gory horror movie, even IF Gregory Peck is in it"). Carol won Most Eloquent and Most Interesting as she told us of how she knew the man she was dating was "the one". This realization hit her when she was out in the field and her future husband came to her home bearing fresh abalone and called Carol's mother "Mom"!

It was then time for the evaluation portion of the meeting. Stephanie gave an evaluation of Ann's speech that was very well-organized (you might say it was extremely uncluttered). We then heard from Fran who told us how we did on staying within time; Carol who reported on our verbal glitches, and Joanna, who did her usual thorough and very helpful job as Grammarian.

See you on August 10th!
