Photo of lateral spreading of ice on Tanana River: for several hundreds of kilometers along the Tanana River, a pattern of polygon shapes defines lateral spreading ground. The polygons formed when the frozen crust (less than 0.3 meters thick) fractured above liquefied ground and displaced.
