Notes

BR199CA Misc. Notes:
There appears to be a slight problem with the vertical control at
this beach. The standard deviation of the field-derived coordinate
system is high. I suggest we look at the GPS data again to determine
if a mistake has been made.

Overview
|
Metropolitan Santa Cruz Beach Surveys
Natural Bridges State Beach, Santa Cruz, CA
11 January 1999, 1120 to 1205 (PST)
|
|
Synopsis
|
A beach and nearshore topographic survey consisting of one shore-normal
profile and one shore-parallel line (wet/dry line) was conducted.
The profile was extended offshore into the surf zone utilizing a swimming
rodman.

Field Procedure
|
The total station was set up near the upper parking lot of the Park, near the entrance hut.
The SECO level rods, in conjunction with the level-rod support tripods were placed on the
control points and pointed towards the total station. As the Control Points were shot,
the tripods and level rods were moved.
Program 10 (site setup) was performed on the total station
Program 20 (station establishment) was performed on the total station using option "Unknown Station Location"
Program 4 (UTM) was used for data collection
Control Points: 10403, 10405, 10402, 10404, and 10401 were surveyed (Fast Standard mode)
The Wet/Dry line was surveyed using the EXP3 stadia rod (Tracking mode)
The established Profile was surveyed using the EXP3 stadia rod (Tracking mode). The swimmer carried
the profile offshore to a point where he was obscured by the southern headland.
Gretchen Luepke sketched the beach and assisted with the control points.
Thomas E. Reiss operated the total station and photographed the area.
Justin Friesner was the rodman.
|
|
Field Observations
|
There was a well-defined wet/dry line. Beach cusps were of low
amplitude. The stream that cuts across the northern edge of the
beach was not breaking through to the ocean.
|
|
Post-processing
|
Survey data was downloaded from the Total Station memory (JOB file is automatically is created).
Raw file is used to generate a PTS file (UTM coordinates are extracted from the original file) Note: no recalculation is performed on the original file)
PFCODE.EXE is used to generate an ED file
The ED file is edited to include necessary Program 10 information, Points block listing, and necessary INFO codes. Field procedures are checked and corrected if necessary
PFGD.EXE is used to generate a Cartesian-based, XYZ file (PF) from the ED file
Extraneous lines are removed from the PF file to generate a DAT file (relative XYZ coordinates)
Data values from the DAT file were put into GRIDCON.XLS (BRIDGES.XLS, sheet 990111B) to convert the relative XYZ Cartesian system to UTM.
UTM values were compared to field observations (PTS file) to check for discrepancies.
UTM data is plotted in plan and profile views using SigmaPlot (v. 4.0)
Digital images were inserted into a MS WORD document and described (IMAGE.TXT file)
