To understand quantity, composition, and temporal and geographic distribution of
sediment in ice of Arctic basin.

|
Summary
|
Ice and snow samples gathered from a series of stations reached by
helicopter and located by GPS. Sea-ice off northern Alaska was sampled, melted
and filtered for particulate matter. Bulk sediment samples were also gathered
for analysis of composition and radionuclide chemistry. Companion study of
organic chemistry and methane content of ice sediment and water column was
conducted by K. Kvenvolden (USGS), M. Lilly (University of Washington), and F.
Sansone (University of Hawaii). These samples have a different numbering scheme
than the ones referred to in the data bank notes.
