- This documents CMG's Field Activity ID formats.
- Multiple IDs may be associated with a single Field Activity.
- The Activity-ID represents an activity (usually field work) by a unique character string.

An InfoBank Activity-ID has four components
CMG InfoBank
Field Activity ID
P-L-YY-RR or P-LL-YY-RR
Platform
A single letter abbreviation of the platform's full name.
Leg
A number (1-2 alphanumerics) corresponding to a "cruise" or "leg" for a particular platform in a particular year.
Year
The last two digits of the year the activity started.
Region
A 2-letter abbreviation of the general activity area.
Disclaimer
Ex: J-4-92-SF or J492SF
J = platform ("Johnston" or "Jordan")
4 = leg (4th cruise for this platform in 1992)
92 = year (1992)
SF = region (San Francisco area)
- Each component can be separated by a hyphen.
Ex: J-4-92-SF and J492SF represent the same activity.
The hyphenated Activity-ID is preferable for readability and is used as the first component in file names.
The non-hypendated Activity_ID version is for convenience and is used for directory names.

Constructing a new ID rarely conflicts with an existing ID.
If this occurs, first consider using an alternate "region" component.
If it still conflicts, contact
InfoBank staff for advice and assistance.
For example, below is a list of some of the activities within the USGS CMG InfoBank:
F-1-88-SC or F188SC = Farnella, Leg 1, 1988, Southern California
F-12-88-NC or F1288NC = Farnella, Leg 12, 1988, Northern California
J-3-82-TB or J382TB = Johnston, Leg 3, 1982, Tomales Bay
L-3-80-NP or L380NP = Lee, Leg 3, 1980, North Pacific
