Description
|
The
Coastal and Marine Geology (CMG)
sediment laboratory is a multi-lab complex that houses various analytical instrumentation. These laboratories provide the analytical capability and support for the general sedimentologic needs of the Coastal and Marine Team, primarily the preparation and analysis of sediment, rock, minerals and other materials collected from the sea floor.
|
Specialized Equipment
|
Coulometrics Coulometer (carbon/carbonate analysis),
state-of-the-art digital Faxitron/MFI X-Ray imaging system for 8-cm
diameter cores up to 1.5 m in length,
Three 2m-long settling tubes for sand-fraction textural analysis,
Sedigraph (fine-grained, silt-clay sediment size analysis)
|
|
The Multi-laboratory complex primarily serves the general sedimentologic
needs of the CMG team, but is accessible to other personnel as well.
Capabilities include:
-
Specialized, lead-lined room for X-ray imaging of long (1.5 m) core sections
-
Darkroom for processing X-ray radiographs of marine sediment
-
Laboratory used to split, describe, photograph and subsample sediment cores
-
Laboratory for coarse-fraction sediment analysis. Uses USGS-built Rapid
Sediment Analyzers (RSA's),
-
Laboratories for analysis of fine-fraction sediment texture, carbon/carbonate
content, heavy mineral separation, insoluble residues, as well as preparation
of samples for use in other labs (e.g., marine mineralogy).
Results are useful in defining sedimentary environments, biohabitats, and
establishing sediment transport models.
