To support inshore and coastal California studies,
the Pacific-Arctic Branch constructed the R/V DAVID JOHNSTON.
David Johnston, a young Survey scientist, was killed by the
May 18, 1980 flank eruption of Mt Saint Helens.
The JOHNSTON was built by the Branch of Pacific Marine Geology
and put in service in 1981.
She principally worked the inshore areas of central and
northern California and San Francisco Bay.
Through a Memorandum of Understanding during much of the 1990s
and into this millennium the JOHNSTON was operated
by University of California, Santa Cruz
while continuing to support USGS programs.
She now resides on her trailer at the Survey's
Marine Facilities (MARFAC), Harbor of Redwood City,
ready for "duties as assigned",
to recall the final line in a traditional USGS job descriptions.
