Our transcription: Vine and Matthews noted that the striped reversal pattern is parallel to mid-ocean ridges.
By 1965 they concluded the best way to explain this relationship is by sea floor spreading.
To check their conclusion, Vine studied the magnetic stripe pattern across several mid-ocean ridges.
He predicted if sea floor spreading did occur, the magnetic pattern on one side of a ridge should be the mirror image of the pattern seen on the other.
With startling precision, Vine's prediction proved correct.
