Our transcription: Nineteenth Century geologists used the names of places and ancient peoples to label other times in geologic history as well.
For example, the Ordovician Period, the Silurian Period, and the Devonian Period after Devon in Southern England.
Characteristic rocks and relative positions of strata were also used to designate new time units, and gradually the geologic time scale was constructed.
