Our transcription: The expedition discovered that the summit of Mt. Katmai had collapsed forming a vast crater or caldera. But there was no evidence the eruption had originated here; instead, magma seemed to have moved out from underneath the summit to escape elsewhere. Unsupported, the mountain top fell in. The actual eruption site lay at the base of the mountain, where a dome of lava had oozed up near the center of the source vent. The expedition named this dome "Noverupta".
