Our transcription: One coastal community that experienced the crushing power of a tsunami firsthand was Hilo, Hawaii.
On April 1, 1946, following an earthquake off the coast of Alaska, one of the most destructive tsunamis of modern time, sped across the Pacific and obliterated the entire shore zone at Hilo.
The death toll that day was 159.
