Our transcription: Another problem is that the flat surface of a seawall reflects much of the wave energy directly back toward the beach.
Unfortunately, this can erode the sand at the foot of the wall, eventually undermining it.
At the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, scientists deal with this controversial issue on a continuing basis.
Scott Jenkins of Scripps Center for Coastal Studies is one of those involved in the design of seawalls, breakwaters, and other coastal structures.
The goal is to design structures that do the job with a minimal negative impact on the environment.
