Abstract:

As part of the USGS California State Mapping website, this Google Maps KMZ file shows the overall progress of the California Seafloor Mapping Program. The map displays colored polygons showing the regions that have been mapped, ground-truthed, as well as previously mapped regions inside an outside of state waters. The map will be updated as needed.

Purpose:

The California Seafloor Mapping Program is a cooperative partnership between state, federal agencies, universities, and industry to create a comprehensive coastal/marine geologic and habitat base map series for all of California's state waters. The U.S. Geological Survey, Western Coastal and Marine Geology maintains the California Seafloor Mapping Program website with this page dedicated to showing the extent of mapping and ground-truth progress.

ESRI shapefiles were created from California State Mapping project mapping footprints. Shapefiles were also created from previously mapped regions along the California coast. The shapefiles were converted into Google map files and added to the Google map. Data sources include the USGS, California State University, Monterey Bay, Fugro Inc, and Monterey Bay Aquarium Institute.
