We have designed this site to accommodate visitors with a wide range of educational backgrounds: from kids in elementary school, to adults with little or no background in geology, to professionals in geology and other earth sciences.

Kids and Teachers

Check out these sites developed by Coastal & Marine Geology team members:

We hope to develop more Web pages on coastal and marine topics for students and teachers. If you would like to suggest a particular topic, please send e-mail to the webteam. Meanwhile, here are some other nice science sites to explore (these will exit our web site):

General Audience

For visitors who are interested in geology but have little or no specialized training, the USGS has pages in what we call the "general audience" category. These pages are designed to give visitors information in language they can quickly understand. Here are examples:

Technical Stuff

Many of our pages will be most useful to visitors with some training in earth science, and a few are quite technical. The pages we lump in the "technical" category range in level of difficulty from Central California/San Francisco Bay Earthquake Hazards Project, which offers technical information but is fairly easy for general readers to follow, to the Bedform Sedimentology Page, whose superb graphics may be difficult for non-specialists to interpret. Don't hesitate to visit any of these pages, particularly if you have access to dictionaries to help you decipher technical terms.

Visit Them All!

Naturally, there will be some overlap among the three categories described above. We plan to add lots of links to explanations of basic concepts that will help interested readers understand virtually every page on this site.
