Abstract:
This is a digital data set including hydrographic sounding data collected off the mouth of the Columbia River and the southern Long Beach Washington Peninsula, by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District. The original data set has been evaluated for inaccuracies and/or inconsistencies and cartographic codes have been changed. The data have been reprojected to Washington Stateplane, FIPS 4602, meters. Attributes inlcude easting, northing, depth-navd(m), depth-mllw(m), cartographic code, survey name, and survey year.
Purpose:
This data set is intended for use as an historical bathymetric data set for scientific research. It is not intended for navigational use. The data were originally aquired for bathymetric change analysis as part of the Southwest Washington Coastal Erosion Study (SWCES), a cooperative study by the US Geological Survey and the Washington State Department of Ecology.

The SWCES was initiated to examine coastal geology, processes, and natural hazards within the Columbia River littoral cell. The study is jointly directed by the U.S. Geological Survey Coastal and Marine Geology Program and the Washington State Department of Ecology Shorelands and Environmental Assistance Program, with active participation of local communities in Pacific and Grays Harbor counties. Title: Columbia River approach and Longbeach extension survey

This data set is a compilation of the 1998 approach survey (ap98su.dat) and the northward extension survey (LB_00_fall98 and LB_CL_fall98) offshore the Longbeach Peninsula. Data courtesy H. Rod Moritz, Portland District USACE and the SWCES.

Process_Description:
Digital data sets Ap98su.dat and LB_00_fall98.dat and LB_CL_fall98.dat were aquired directly from the USACE in the format easting(ft), northing(ft), depth-mllw-feet in Washington State Plane South-NAD83, Zone 4602. MLLW = -3.56ft NGVD; Ft. Stevens.

Data were reprojected to Washington Stateplane South-NAD83, FIPS 4602 and MLLW meters and combined.

NAVD88 depths were calculated using the offset determined at the Ft. Stevens tide gauge, where NAVD88 depth = -0.16m + MLLW depth.

The data set was evaluated for errors and/or inaccuracies and cartographic codes were changed. Soundings on the northernmost line appear about 1m too deep; soundings on line 2nd from the north appear about 2.5m too deep. These two lines were given a cartographic code of 999 and should not be used for analysis.

The data set was formerly known as pcoe98pts
