Abstract National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,United States Geological Survey, St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center. Chief Scientists: Dwight Gledhill, Greg Piniak, Ryan Moyer. Coral reef community structure and biogeochemical cycling surveys data of field activity 11CRC01 (C-1-11-PR) in La Parguera from 01/07/2011 to 09/30/2011

Information Specialist
Ryan Moyer
To collect quarterly community structure, rugosity, and biogeochemical cycling
data using line transects and in situ geochemical sampling apparatus.
(Four quarterly sampling trips have been scheduled, dates to be determined).
Information to be Derived
Reef organisms assemblages, seasonal change in community structure, reef
rugosity, ambient pCO2, ambient [O2].
Divers will swim along 50-m line transects and collect photo-quadrate data and
ambient coral species data. A weighted line of known length will be deployed
and used to measure reef rugosity. A CROSS benthic flux unit will be deployed
to measure pCO2 and [O2] at the reef/water column interface. Discrete water
samples will be collected using a peristaltic pump for future geochemical
analysis. Photo-quadrate data will be analyzed in the lab using Coral Point
Count (CPCe) software.
Research Topic: Linking Coral Reef Ecology and Chemistry at the Atlantic Ocean
Acidification Test-Bed
Additional Equipment: 1 x 0.75 m photo quadrate framer, Fiberglass measuring
tape reels, Chain line, CROSS benthic flux unit, NOAA PMEL MAPCO2 buoy
Additional Info: Major funding for this project is provided by NOAA. Logistical
support for this field activity is being provided by the USGS Caribbean Water
Science Center. Contacts: Ryan Moyer (USGS - St. Petersburg) or Pedro Diaz (USGS
- Puerto Rico)
Site 1 - Cayo Enrique (fore-reef)
Site 2 - San Cristobal (back-reef lagoon)
Site 3 - La Atravaso (seagrass bed)
