   Geodetic control for this beach appears to be very good. The Profile is delineated by the row of telephone poles shore-normal to the 
   beach and East Cliff Drive. Control Point 11004 is on the Profile and sits between the south edge of the road and the white median stripe. 
   It has been tarred over and can be difficult to find. While dredging, the effluent is pumped nearshore, directly on the Profile. 
   This can result in a hazardous situation, both physically and health-wise. Local surfers frequent this area.
Metropolitan Santa Cruz Beach Surveys
  Harbor Beach, Santa Cruz, CA     12 January 1999, 1500 to1600 (PST)
Synopsis   A beach and nearshore topographic survey consisting of one shore-normal profile and one shore-parallel line   (wet/dry line) was conducted. The profile was extended offshore into the surf zone utilizing a swimming rodman.

Field Procedure   The total station was set up on the sand, mid-backbeach, west of the Profile. The HA reference was set to 000d   relative to Control Point 11003 "Shops". The SECO level rods, in conjunction with the level-rod support tripods   were placed on the control points and pointed towards the total station.   Program 10 (site setup) was performed on the total station   Program 20 (station establishment) was performed on the total station using option "Unknown Station Location", utilizing Control Points 11003, 11004, and 11005.   Program 4 (UTM) was used to collect control and topo points   Control Points: 11005, 11003, and 11004 were surveyed (Fast Standard mode)   The Profile was surveyed using the EXP3 stadia rod (Tracking mode) and carried offshore into the surf zone.   The profile was carried out to the maximum limit of the stadia rod, offshore.   The Wet/Dry line was surveyed using the EXP3 stadia rod (Tracking mode)   Gretchen Luepke sketched the beach and assisted with the control points.   Thomas E. Field Observations   Active dredging of the harbor and the subsequent beach nourishment at this location has resulted in unnatural beach morphology.   The beach to the east appears deflated and topographically lower. There are well-defined beach cusps of modest height.   Bluff erosion in the vicinity of the road threatens the road.
Post-processing   Survey data was downloaded from the Total Station memory (a JOB file is automatically is created from the RAW file).   The RAW file was used to generate a PTS file (UTM coordinates are extracted from the RAW file) Note: no recalculation   is performed on the original file)   PFCODE.EXE was used on the JOB file to generate an ED file   The ED file was edited to include necessary Program 10 information, Points block listing, and necessary INFO codes. Field procedures   were checked and corrected as necessary.   PFGD.EXE was used on the ED file to generate a PF file (Cartesian-based, XYZ coordinates)   Extraneous lines were removed from the PF file to generate a DAT file (relative XYZ coordinates)   Data values from the DAT file were put into GRIDCON.XLS (HARBOR.XLS, sheet 990112D) to convert the relative XYZ data   (Cartesian system) to UTM.   UTM values were extracted from YELLOW.XLS (UTM file) and compared to field observations (PTS file) to check for discrepancies.   UTM data was plotted in plan and profile views using SigmaPlot (v. 4.0)  Digital images were inserted into a MS WORD document and described (IMAGE.TXT file)
